Normanton Station Car Park Renewal

Overview

The project aimed to modernise the existing parking facilities, improve accessibility, and ensure long-term structural resilience through upgraded retaining systems, drainage, and lighting.

The scheme involved constructing a 145-bay carpark, including 4 accessible bays, 4 bays with passive provision for future EV charging, and a dedicated drop-off point, all designed to meet Network Rail and NTL standards for passenger safety and sustainability.

Scope of works

The works were delivered under a fully managed package, with INL providing on-site engineering support and quality assurance from inception to completion. The scope included:

• Monitoring & surveying: Installation of movement targets on the existing retaining wall to monitor any displacement during construction.
• Setting out & supervision: Full-time site engineering support for precision setting out of all civil works.
• Demolition & excavation: Removal of the existing carpark structure, including the excavation and safe disposal of contaminated material to a licensed hazardous waste facility.
• Retaining wall construction: Installation of a new GGW MSE retaining wall around the perimeter, providing structural integrity for the long-term stability of the site.
• Drainage & attenuation: Construction of a new drainage system with an attenuation tank and rising main connection to control surface water run-off.
• Civils & surfacing:
  • New kerb lines, sub-base reprofiling, and Armco barriers
  • Tarmac surfacing, road markings, and pedestrian wayfinding routes
  • Installation of tactile paving and drop kerbs for accessibility
• Electrical & Security Installations:
  • New lighting and CCTV columns
  • Palisade fencing and access gate
  • Collision bollards protecting lighting and CCTV infrastructure

Challenges & solutions

The existing site presented contaminated ground conditions and an unstable retaining wall, both of which required careful sequencing and continuous monitoring to maintain site safety. INL’s integrated survey and engineering team ensured stability through real-time movement monitoring and staged excavation.

To minimise disruption to station operations and the local community, works were carefully programmed around passenger flow and off-peak hours, with clear pedestrian diversions and temporary lighting provided throughout.

Outcome

The completed carpark now provides a safe, accessible, and modern facility for rail users, enhancing station aesthetics and passenger experience. The new infrastructure significantly improves drainage efficiency, lighting quality, and long-term asset performance for Northern Trains.
