FAQs

What is a railway track survey?

A railway track survey captures detailed data about the position (across three axes), alignment, elevation, curvature, cant and condition of a track. This information is essential for design, maintenance, verification and safety.

How accurate are your track surveys?

We use high precision equipment and quality control to deliver data to tight tolerances. The exact accuracy depends on the survey method, track conditions and project requirements but will always be determined by the relevant Network Rail (or other) standard and/or project specification.

Do your surveys comply with standards?

Yes. All railway track surveys are conducted in accordance with the relevant Network Rail standards. This ensures that the results are credible and accepted across the industry.

Can you survey large lengths of line?

Yes. We are equipped to survey extended track sections and full railway corridors, combining field techniques to maintain efficiency and accuracy.

Will the survey detect track wear or defects?

Yes. Where required, we can include rail wear assessment, profile checks and condition reporting as part of the survey package.

What formats do you provide the data in?

We deliver in formats that suit your workflow – CAD, point clouds, 3D models, alignment sheets or GIS exports. We confirm formats before work begins to ensure compatibility.

How long does a track survey take?

The time it takes to complete a railway track surveys depends on the size and complexity of the site, the availability of and any limitations upon track access, whether there are any other parties accessing the track during our survey, and so on. A clear timeline is provided during the quotation process and updates are given throughout.

Can this be combined with other surveys?

Yes. Railway track surveys often complement or form part of wider topographic surveys, with the results of drainage or utility mapping surveys – and/or the position of ground investigation locations (e.g. boreholes or trial pits) added to provide a far more comprehensive deliverable.
