FAQs
What is structural inspection and testing?
Structural inspection and testing includes visual examination plus non-destructive evaluation or material testing to assess the condition, safety and performance of structural elements. It helps identify issues that are not immediately visible.
Why do I need it?
You need it to confirm the integrity of a structure, understand its remaining life, diagnose defects, validate repair methods, or locate sub-surface objects such as rebar (concrete reinforcement) or cables. It reduces risk and supports informed decision-making on remediation or ongoing maintenance.
How intrusive is testing?
Many tests are non-destructive and cause no damage to the structure. In some cases, limited sampling, break outs, or coring might be required. We discuss these options ahead of time and minimise impact.
Do you follow recognised standards?
Yes. All inspection and testing is carried out in accordance with relevant industry standards and national or international standards for inspection and non-destructive testing. This ensures credibility and acceptance of the results.
How accurate are the tests?
Accuracy depends on the type of test, the condition of the material and accessibility. We use calibrated equipment, skilled operators and validation procedures to maximise reliability.
Can you test for corrosion or concrete degradation?
Yes. We routinely carry out corrosion assessment, carbonation depth measurement, chloride profiling, and concrete strength tests, along with visual checks for spalling, cracking or delamination.
Do you supply load testing?
We can. Where required, we can perform proof load testing on beams, slabs or structural members to confirm performance under applied loads.
What format will my report take?
You will receive a structured report (PDF or digital) with test results, annotated drawings, photos, observations, risk levels and recommended actions. We can also supply data tables or BIM models as needed.
How long does an inspection and testing project take?
It depends on the scale, accessibility and number of tests required. Most projects will take anywhere from a few hours to a few days on site followed by a period of testing, data analysis, and reporting back in the office. Some larger and/or more complex projects have taken considerably longer than this, however. During the quotation stage we will provide a timeline and keep you informed at each stage.
