FAQs

What is a topographic survey?

A topographic, or land, survey maps out the natural and man-made features of a site, along with the ground levels and contours. It provides the base information designers and engineers need to plan and build accurately.

Why would I need one?

If you’re designing a new structure, extending existing buildings or planning site improvements, a topographic survey ensures you are working from accurate, up-to-date information and helps to avoid costly mistakes later on.

How accurate are your surveys?

Whilst the level of accuracy may be determined by the required specification for your project, all surveys are carried out in accordance with RICS (and other industry-specific) standards and are completed using high-precision equipment. Rigorous quality checks are then carried out in order to achieve the level of accuracy most appropriate for your survey.

Do your surveys meet recognised standards?

Absolutely. All our work is completed in accordance with RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) standards and, where applicable, other industry-specific standards such as those supplied by Network Rail.

Can you work anywhere in the UK?

Yes. Our UK-based teams operate nationwide and are experienced in working in a wide range of environments, from city centres to rural locations. We also have a global arm to the business that operates elsewhere in the world.

Do you offer drone surveys?

We certainly do. Drone-based data capture can be a fast, cost-effective, and safe way to survey large or difficult-to-access areas safely and efficiently. If we feel this will be the best approach to take for your survey we’ll be sure to mention it.

Can you show underground utilities too?

Yes. We can combine topographic and underground utility survey data to give you a complete surface and subsurface picture of your site.

What format will I receive my survey in?

We deliver data in a range of digital formats, including CAD, PDF and GIS files. We will discuss what works best for your team at the outset to ensure seamless integration.

How long will it take?

Timeframes vary depending on the size and complexity of the site with topographic surveys taking anywhere from a few hours on site to many weeks or even months. Once the fieldwork is complete, there’s then additional time required to process your data back in the office. No matter what the timescales are, we’ll always provide a clear schedule at the start and keep you updated throughout the process.
